We have been running articles for months, on the importance of Vitamin D, particularly in diabetics who are listed as 85% vitamin D deficient.
Then I read that is close to the same figure as the general public.
Flu and colds, happen primarily over the cold weather season which is the LOW vitamin D season.
You have likely observed over the years you cold and flu infections were closely tied to the season and now that you think about it likely correlated with your lowest natural vitamin D status.
Vitamin D turns out as we have said not a vitamin at all but a crucial regulating body hormone.
Whether it is adequate or not is going to makes a big difference in your overall health.
Vitamin D being a hormone, turns out it is essential for your immune system to function properly.
In fact, the "activated" form of vitamin D is necessary to turn on and max your innate immune system. Without that essential vitamin D, there is going to be little built in immunity.
Turns out the more studies we read that vitamin d is one of the most vital substances in the human body.
Essentially it is free, but over the winter season (you can store it for a while but not for all winter). You need to get as much sun exposure to as much skin as you can because the natural made vitamin from sunshine on your skin is far superior to any supplements.
We mentioned in previous articles that cholesterol in your skin layers is used to make vitamin D. You should NOT wash the oil off of your sun exposed skin for three days to obtain full vitamin D production. You can wash your skin with water but hold off the soap for three days.
85% of us are reported or expected to be vitamin D deficient for at least part of the year.
You will get almost no significant dietary vitamin D. In northern climates most over the years augmented with a table spoon of good cod liver oil daily. Still useful.
Many who do not live in a sunny locale, figure out their vacations in the winter to go south and enjoy time in the sun when it is warm and pick up a week of hanging out in the sun. They call this catching a few rays.
Full disclosure here: I rent private homes as fully furnished vacation homes and deal with a lot of Canadians who come to Arizona for a week or two every winter primarily to get some sunshine, as they call it. Turns out likely much cheaper then medical bills.
The government's has an RDA listing for vitamin D which is totally inadequate.
The books on the subject say that adults should be taking a minimum of 2,000 IU of vitamin D every day. Some suggest you get tested once a year for vitamin D.
Meanwhile, back at Flu and colds and general winter illnesses.....
Your fixing your sugar input to fix your diabetes will at the same time do much to fix your immune system since sugar has long been shown to suppress your immune system efficiency up to 90%..
We could cite the studies etc...just take my word for it, your getting off sugar is going to change a lot of things about your health for the better. Your author has lost one day to flu like symptoms in five years, off of sugar, no colds, nothing. I like you, cut out the sugar for my diabetes, no colds and no flu were bonuses.
20 years ago i had a business that was very busy at Christmas time, I got a flu shot at the start of my busy season to help keep from getting the flu and being off in my peak season. I almost immediately became very ill, had 106 fever, and almost died, out for two weeks. Went back to work and it happened all over again for another two weeks. Cost me almost my whole years income being out during the peak season.
Do not talk to me about flu shots.
A year later I ran into a widow whose husband had done the same thing at the same time and had died from his flu shot..
Turns out I had lucked out. Apparently not completely deactivated batch.
