Abdominal obesity it seems is now deemed a much better determinant of cardiovascular disease risk and overall life expectancy than weight or Body Mass Index; The scales has been replaced by a tape measure. Waist measurement is more important than overall weight, experts say from recent studies. Therefore, a tape measure is now considered better guide to future health risks than your long time bathroom scales.
Indications are that fat cells which develop around the waist pump out body chemicals which somehow damage the insulin system. Women with waists over 35 inches and 40in-waists on men are classed as high risk. Some use waist to hip comparisons with waist exceeding hip, a problem area. It is these two types of waist measurements rather than overall weight which experts believe now, have become the best predictor of future health problems. and overall longevity. Larger waists - a beer gut or apple shape - are traditionally assumed to develop on men, whereas women are thought to carry weight on the thighs - known as pear shaped. The pear shape has been considered less danger to over all health. New studies indicate however that both men and women are at risk of ill health through weight gain of this type. they now claim it causes 'Incredible risk' for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease and predict it more accurately than weight and this figure of men with waists of more than 40ins and women with waist measurements of more than 35ins are at now both considered at high risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The thicker waistlines seem to quadruple these risks, compared to those with slimmer waistlines. Large waist people are just as at risk of those who are clinically obese. Recent research indicates that fat cells around the waistline are not passive lumps of lard but are highly active, pumping out proteins and hormones in excess that cause damage to insulin use, also raising blood pressure. Diabetes is caused as you know by insulin resistance, and this they have now determined can be triggered by excess weight around the abdomen.
Conclusion: Based on a lot of research, this waist measurement increase is probably the biggest hindrance of extending life expectancy then any other physical development.
