What is High Fructose Corn Syrup, HFCS?

High Fructose Corn Syrup is made from genetically modified corn and then it is processed with genetically modified enzymes. Average consumption is now over 88 pounds.

HFCS is made in several complicated chemical manufacturing steps including fermentation, from highly modified corn starch.

The theory is that the body processes high fructose corn syrup differently than cane or beet sugar, and alters the way metabolic-regulating hormones function.

HFCS cause the liver to move more fat into your bloodstream, and tricks your body into eating more and all the while, is storing more fat.

HFCS is as a result suspected as a major cause of the obesity epidemic.

Fructose reduces the affinity of insulin for its receptor, which is the hallmark of type-2 diabetes. This is the first step for glucose to enter a cell and be metabolized. As a result, the body needs to pump out more insulin to handle the same amount of glucose.

A recent study performed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed that high fructose diets shortened the life span of laboratory mice from the normal two years to an astounding five weeks.

One study performed with human subjects was inadvertently stopped short of completion as some of the subjects developed abnormal heart conditions.
