Exercise is crucial for diabetics to work in with a change in life style and is
one of the hardest steps to implement and to get on to doing it automatically on
a schedule.
Doing nothing was easy, this smells like work.
Yet, a change in health for a diabetic is almost impossible if you do not
correct or add the exercise leg to your life style change.
If you do not get your exercise life style change set up on automatic, to where
it is easy and fun, it will in a short time will simply self destruct and no
matter how good your intentions, it will come unglued.
You will just ease back in and resume sedentary.
Therefore, it has to be excuse proof.
Plan on extra exercise six days a week at least.
Get set up, at least two of those days every week to walk with a friend,
play tennis with a friend, or some physical activity, or sport, with some
other person or group that needs to exercise just as much as you do.
You will motivate them to be sure and do what needs to be done and the other
way around.
You are obligated not only to yourself, but another person is counting on you.
Northern climate people will often use the excuse, (so will other areas)
"the weather is not right, lets skip today"
Change to "lets mall walk today," meet you at (name of mall) east
entrance at 5pm.
Change malls, change entrances, change levels etc.
Get a pedometer and set up your activity, whatever it is, to include a daily
minimum of 10,000 steps.
To do therapeutic walking you need 20,000 steps.
Biggest and best key to exercise, is simply to get a dogor
borrow one.
Every neighbor that has a dog would love to have someone take their dog for a
walk.
Volunteer...
Make it definite times at definite days. Be a volunteer. Walk dogs at the pound
in groups, a real challenge, they need volunteers, so if you can not own
your own dog, (best bet) it still works
...borrow one.
A recent study shows that those who got a dog lost more weight then those
joining weight loss groups.
You have not only a commitment with yourself, you have one with the dog...and they
will remind you.
and, their enthusiasm is catching....
Get a Rebounder
A mini-trampoline. (little round indoor device that folds)
some claim, that rebounding on a mini-trampoline allows you to
work harder and for longer than most workouts because your
energy isn't being used to absorb the shock of the hard
surface.
Here is a paragraph from a promo
"Rebounding is a zero-impact aerobic exercise that improves
blood circulation and increases the capacity of both the heart and
lungs. With regular rebounding the resting heart rate can decline 10
beats per minute, which means 5,000 fewer heartbeats in a single
night's sleep."
This promo also claims the bounce does amazing things for your
insides. Most that use them with music supplied etc are
enthusiastic.
There are lots of different grades and of quality and the good ones
come with an instruction video to follow along with lots of different
types of advancing exercises that are interesting (different steps
with different music etc.) and a challenge on doing this right.
$50 range, but you can pick one up at the thrift shop sometimes for
ten bucks but usually no instructions and video.
Also eBay for around $35.
These fold up but you can just lean
them against the wall.
Big thing is you can work up a real sweat...
Key to exercise life style change is to do things that you can
continue to do over time no matter what the weather etc.
Set up a weekly bowling date (badminton, anything) with a friend or group,
(not very good exercise but beats nothing).
Set up a weekly time to go to the park with the grand kids to play frisbee,
or take your dog and the grand kids and their dog for a new area
investigative walk.
Best bet is a scheduled time and day weekly
This is your exercise addition (set in concrete for that day.
Do your usual activities and add gardening, extra cleaning, things you might
pay someone else to come in and do, do them yourself and expend the energy and
you get the exercise.
This is all maintenance exercise, the regularly scheduled is in addition.
Reward yourself as a general practice, with a fun activity after
you've completed scheduled exercise, take a bubble bath, watch a dvd, or read
a book you've always looked forward to.
(Food is no longer a reward, food is now only for maintenance.)
Exercise Parameters Simple Version
The Intensity Test:
You
need some of your daily exercise to be exertive to the extent that it
makes if difficult to exercise and communicate with the personnext to you.
If
you have extended yourself to where you can not communicate with the
person next to you, then you have gone too far. Back off a little.
